The smörgĂ„stĂ„rta (Swedish for “sandwich cake”) is the latest trend taking over TikTok, merging three universal love languages: carbs, cake and cream cheese.

Once a staple at Nordic birthdays and brunches, the smörgĂ„stĂ„rta is making a comeback thanks to creators who’ve turned it into the ultimate edible centerpiece. Some go traditional with dill, cucumber and shrimp; others take a high-fashion approach with truffle pĂątĂ©, pea pesto, and edible flowers. The result? A savory showpiece that looks straight out of The Menu but tastes like your favorite picnic sandwich.

Lily Morello of @lilybubbletea gave her cake the truffle pĂątĂ© treatment, @gizzierskine called her salmon-filled version “the perfect festive centerpiece,” and Martha Stewart dubbed savory tea sandwiches the next big thing for cocktail parties.

Even Molly Yeh got into the action with her smörgĂ„stĂ„rta with ham star cut outs, fresh herbs and eggs. It fits right into the internet’s current obsession with nostalgia, turning grandma’s recipes into a campy, ironic spin.

Call it chaos cooking or aesthetic snacking, but one thing’s clear: savory is the new sweet. Because who says cake has to be dessert?
