Peep shows take on a whole new meaning at this adults-only North Carolina retreat.
As the trees are colormaxxing this fall, there’s a new way to leaf peep that involves a bathtub, killer views and won’t make the New Englanders mad. Cradled high in the Smoky Mountains, Lakeview at Fontana, an adults-only retreat, redefines forest bathing.
The inn’s Treetop Soak Cabana experience swaps sterile spa rooms for open-air tubs, whispering leaves and mountain mist. Along a quiet forest path, you’ll find three private cabanas, each outfitted with an oversized soaking tub, nature views and complete privacy.
Fill your tub with Epsom and Himalayan salts, wrap up in plush robes and let the day dissolve. Whether solo or as a couple, soaks start at 90 minutes and can be extended to a three-hour session. Choose from the Signature Soak with mineral-rich salts, the High Vibes Ritual featuring rose quartz-charged salts and a jade hand stone or the Get Glowing Ritual with a take-home exfoliating cloth and hydrating face mask.
There’s no WiFi, no TVs and no front desk. Just self-check-in serenity, an honor-system market stocked with local snacks and bath products and the kind of stillness you can’t find on your phone. It’s the anti-resort resort; less “press for champagne,” more “pour your own peace.”
Overnight guests settle into farmhouse-style suites that open to lake and forest views. The mood lands somewhere between cottagecore and Scandi calm, where neutral tones meet mountain air and every detail feels intentional, from the soft throws and local coffee to the spring-fed pool and complimentary snacks.
Open from April through mid-November, Lakeview is designed for those who want to truly disappear for a while. Four-legged friends are welcome, too.
