No longer a humble mantelpiece, gingerbread houses have become a status symbol. Blame the Kardashians, blame the maximalism trend taking over or blame the fact that everyone’s feeling a little extra this holiday season. But these houses are over-the-top, in the best way. Say hello to the Versace of gingerbread houses. Solvang Bakery is the spot celebrities call when they want something bigger than a “cute little cottage.” Kelly Ripa, the Kardashians, Neil Patrick Harris and even Elton John order their seasonal showpieces. Their custom builds look like edible real estate listings, complete with glowing fireplaces, working lights and dramatic black-and-white façades that feel straight off a Kardashian holiday tablescape. San Francisco-based creator and cook @lizfoodfeed’s gingerbread houses have become the stuff of legend and 200k followers are here for it. From a gingerbread greenhouse to a gingerbread cafe with a chocolate stepping stone pathway, Liz’s designs are high design meets holiday. She most recently crafted a San Francisco Victorian, built with 42 gingerbread panels, nine pounds of dough and enough icing to outline every bay window, corbel and staircase flourish. There’s a chocolate-rock driveway, dry-ice fog for dramatic effect and a twinkling tree glowing through the sugar-glass windows.
